Cherry Blossom Season in Maryland

  • February 26, 2026

MARYLAND

When the Blossoms Return

As winter’s chill fades from the Mid-Atlantic, the Washington region transforms, often in what feels like an instant. The once-bare branches suddenly burst into a soft canvas of pale pinks and whites, inviting people onto the sidewalks to linger under the floral canopy.

Cherry blossom season draws international visitors, yet some of the most memorable moments are found just outside the city in neighborhoods like Chevy Chase and Bethesda. Here, spring seamlessly integrates into the rhythm of daily life, a much-anticipated welcome after the cold winter months.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival, which spans Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia, runs from March 20 to April 12. This four-week event marks the arrival of spring with a rich array of cultural programs, community gatherings, and outdoor festivities. The festival’s tradition dates back to 1912, celebrating the original gift of cherry trees to the Tidal Basin from Japan.

While the Tidal Basin garners global attention, locals will tell you that the true magic of the season is felt when you cross into Maryland. If you’re planning a visit during peak bloom, here is a guide to experiencing the best of the cherry blossoms right here in Montgomery County.

Kenwood in Bloom

The heart of blossom season in Bethesda and Chevy Chase lives in the Kenwood neighborhood. With roughly 1,200 Yoshino cherry trees lining residential streets, the area transforms into a canopy of pale pink and white petals each year. In contrast to the city-like hustle of downtown DC, Kenwood offers a sense of calm and intention. Homes are tucked beneath the blooms, sidewalks fill with walkers and cyclists, and the entire neighborhood takes on a storybook quality. The trees were originally planted in the 1930s as part of a planned community design, and today they draw thousands of visitors who want a less crowded alternative to the Tidal Basin.

Best ways to experience Kenwood during bloom:

  • Walk or bike in via the Capital Crescent Trail
  • Wander the iconic, beautiful streets like Brookside Drive or Kennedy Drive
  • Enjoy a leisurely morning walk. Grab a coffee, tune into a podcast, or invite a friend to join you

Peak bloom typically lands in late March or early April depending on weather, often just after the DC blossoms reach their peak. Pro tip: Many locals park in downtown Bethesda and walk into the neighborhood instead of driving through it. Not only does this reduce the stress of searching for a street spot closer in, but it also allows for a smoother, more relaxed experience.

Capital Crescent Trail: The Scenic Way to Chase Petals

The Capital Crescent Trail offers one of the best ways to experience blossom season in Bethesda, whether you’re walking or biking. This scenic corridor connects downtown Bethesda to Kenwood and neighboring areas. Locals particularly enjoy this route as a gentle introduction to the season. The journey itself is as significant as the destination; the rhythm of the walk or ride creates the familiar feeling that spring has arrived. You’ll move through wooded areas and catch glimpses of neighborhoods before reaching the streets famously lined with the blooming cherry trees.

More Places to See Blossoms Nearby

While Kenwood is most widely known for the cherry blossom displays, several nearby spots offer quieter blossom viewing without heading into the city.

Brookside Gardens

A botanical setting with smaller clusters of cherry trees, Brookside Gardens offers a more curated experience with walking paths and landscaped views.

National Harbor

Just across the Potomac, National Harbor offers a lively extension of cherry blossom season, with waterfront walks, outdoor dining, and festival energy tied to the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The promenade fills with spring décor, pop-ups, and views of the river that make it an easy afternoon stop during peak bloom.

Glenview Mansion & Local Parks

Visitors can experience the beauty of the cherry blossoms at the formal gardens at Glenview Mansion in Rockville Civic Center Park, where Kwanzan cherry trees line the road. According to the City of Rockville’s horticulturalist, Kwanzan trees bloom a week or two after their Yoshino cousins that are found in abundance in the garden. In addition, nearby Montgomery County parks like Takoma Park feature scattered blossoms across green spaces, making them ideal for picnics or family outings.

A Quick Trip Into DC

Of course, one of the main draws of the Bethesda and Chevy Chase areas is their close proximity to Washington, DC. Residents can easily access the city’s signature festival events via a quick Metro ride or drive. These events, held at the Tidal Basin, feature live performances, cultural programming, and community celebrations throughout the festival. Highlights include family-friendly activities such as the Pink Tie Party, the National Cherry Blossom Freedom Walk, and PetalpaloozaⓇ at Navy Yard. The evening on April 4th culminates in the breathtaking Official National Cherry Blossom Fireworks show, a dazzling choreographed display set to music starting at 8:30 PM. It’s a must-see!

Festival Season Across the Region

Although many signature events take place in Washington, DC, the National Cherry Blossom Festival extends well beyond the city limits. The four-week celebration honors the historic friendship between Japan and the United States through art, performances, and cultural programming across the region.

From late March through early April, the atmosphere shifts across Montgomery County. Restaurants introduce seasonal menus. Public art installations (usually all very pink-hued) and community programming appear throughout neighboring communities. The flow of visitors across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia creates a shared regional experience, making it more than a single-location event.

Some festival highlights often include:

  • The Opening Ceremony
  • National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade
  • BloomFest at the Tidal Basin
  • Blossom Kite Festival

And more!

Where the Season Meets Home

Spring in Maryland is a season where everyday moments are beautifully amplified, especially with the arrival of cherry blossoms. This time of year captures the cherished balance of life here: the community feels calm, welcoming, and easy to settle into, while still offering connection to the city. From serene walks in Kenwood to vibrant festival energy and relaxing waterfront afternoons, this seasonal rhythm is deeply woven into the fabric of daily life.

Whether you’re exploring blossom-lined streets for the first time or rediscovering them as a local, this season offers a reminder of why so many people choose to call this area their home. And if you find yourself lingering just a little longer beneath the blooms, you’re not alone. That’s simply what spring in Maryland tends to do.
